A natural hormone produced in our brain, released to aid in sleep.
Helps those with difficulty maintaining normal sleep cycles.
Sublingual Melatonin works most efficiently.
Purity and Quality of hormone supplement is important for best results .
Melatonin is a hormone released by the pineal gland in the brain, especially at night. Its production is stimulated by dark and inhibited by light. Melatonin levels are much higher in children than in adults. Levels decline as we age, which explains why sleep difficulty is more common as people age. Adequate sleep, however, is crucial for weight control, metabolism, mood, energy, and sense of well-being. Approximately 7-8 hours per night is recommended.
What Are Its Functions?
Melatonin is very effective at establishing and maintaining a normal sleep cycle. It is effective for jet lag. It is also used for those with interrupted sleep cycles or difficulty getting to sleep. Some consider Melatonin as an “anti-aging” hormone, however more research is needed.
How Is It Used?
Timing is very important in the use of Melatonin. For best results, take Melatonin as close to bedtime as possible. We recommend using sublingual Melatonin that dissolves under the tongue (chew and let dissolve) for the fastest, most effective results.
Is High Quality Melatonin Expensive?
No. Melatonin is inexpensive. However, it is an important body hormone. We do not recommend taking an unknown brand or dosage form. Purity and quality of product is very important on all hormones. Delivery methods (i.e. capsule vs tablets vs sublingual) vary with different products. We recommend immediate release, sublingual Melatonin from Tague Nutrition, which is of high quality and purity for consistent effect of pure melatonin.
Are There Side Effects?
Side effects with Melatonin seem to be minimal or non-existent as far as we know. More studies need to be performed. However, current evidence suggests that Melatonin is safe, especially when used on an “as needed” basis for jet lag or as a general sleep aid in place of prescription medications. The most common side effect is drowsiness on the following day if too high of a dosage is taken. This is most common with doses of 3 or more milligrams. Vivid dreams are also common. Fatigue or depression can occur, particularly if dosage is excessive.
What Doses Are Recommended?
With Melatonin, sometimes less is better. We recommend starting with approximately 1 mg of Melatonin chewed and placed under the tongue. The sublingual Melatonin tablets from Tague Nutrition are 1 mg each. We recommend starting with 1 tablet under the tongue within 15 minutes of bedtime. If still awake 30 minutes later, repeat. You may find that you need anywhere from 1 up to 3 sublingual tablets of Melatonin. Use the least amount that is effective for you.
